Carnitine is a nutrient that our body can make, but sometimes we need to eat more of it or take supplements. It is important for our heart, liver, and kidney. Our body uses certain nutrients like lysine, methionine, vitamin B, vitamin C, and iron to make carnitine.

If we don't have enough of these nutrients, we might not be able to make enough carnitine, which can put us at risk for a deficiency. When our carnitine levels are too low, we might experience symptoms like high triglycerides, muscle cramps and weakness, fatigue, impaired blood sugar, congestive heart failure, and neuropathy.
