The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) developed the “Energy Justice Mapping Tool for Schools” to allow users to explore and produce reports for a specific school facility, including but not limited to the following metrics: whether the school is located in a Disadvantaged Community (DAC), whether it is in a rural location (coded as 41, 42, 43), whether it is designated as a community shelter, and whether the school qualifies for Title I Schoolwide programming.

This short tutorial will walk users through how to use the Energy Justice Mapping Tool for Schools, and how to read, print, and save the associated metrics for a given public school or public school district, referred to as a Local Educational Agency (LEA). This tool maps all K-12 Public Schools, including public charter schools. It also maps LEAs. Private Schools are not included in this map. This data comes from the U.S. Department of Education’s – National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) for School Year 2022-2023. If the school you are searching for opened in 2023, 2024, or beyond, you will not find that school included in this current mapping tool.

This tool can be found at “energyjustice-schools.egs.anl.gov”.
