Tesla just this week released its in house charing adapter for CCS chargers. CCS is the second most used charging plug in North America, second to Tesla (based on total number of EV's on the road). Only Tesla's can use the Tesla Supercharging network at this time, and to use the CCS fast charging network, you need an adapter, which until this week, was not available.

Just recently the aftermarket has come up with their own CCS to Tesla charging adapters and most come in at the same $250 price as Teslas direct adapter. This adapter will allow Teslas to access CCS 1 fast chargers in North America and accept up to 250 kW charge rate, matching the speed of Teslas own V3 Supercharging network.

Although many CCS fast chargers like Electrify America aren't widely know to be as reliable as Teslas Supercharging network, they are getting better. In addition, just this last month, the first round of $900M was approved to expand public fast charging across 30+ states. With the expansion of public charging network, most of these chargers are going to be equipped with CCS1 and J-1772 charging cables. To be able to access the fastest charging speeds on these new chargers, your Tesla will require this adapter.

Before you buy, make sure to check in the software tab of your Teslas screen to ensure CCS is Enabled. If you have an older Model 3, or legacy Model X and Model S, your Tesla is not likely equipped with the proper ECU to accept/communicate with CCS. Tesla has communicated that a retrofit will be made available for legacy cars starting in 2023, expanding access to the public charging network.
