Before Mario + Rabbids, for many years Nintendo was known for 2 things, innovating the video game industry in new and unique ways, and letting absolutely nobody at all even remotely think about using their beloved intellectual properties. There were many companies who thought they could do something new and interesting with Mario, but Nintendo knew better and just released New Super Mario Bros on DS instead. Until that one fateful evening where Ubisoft actually made a decent game.
