This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new Honda CR-V hybrid with the recent Kia Sportage Hybrid compact SUVs. The CR-V has a 2L 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine with Honda’s new 4th generation hybrid system featuring a pair of electric motors. It’s matched to an ECVT and has a combined 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque, standard AWD in Canada, FWD and AWD options are available in the US. You get about 835 km/519 miles to every fill.

The Kia Sportage hybrid has a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission, a combined 227 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD in Canada, FWD and AWD options in the US. You get about 838 km/521 miles to every fill.

The CR-V is almost an inch longer than the Sportage. For interior space, they are very similar in size offering about the same front and second row legroom along with cargo space behind the second row. Overall cargo space goes to the CR-V offering 76.5 cubic feet of space, the Kia has 73.7 cubic feet.

The Sportage gets better fuel economy at 6.1L/100 km, 38 MPG city and 6.3L/100 km, 38 MPG highway. The Honda 6L/100 km, 40 MPG city and 6.9L/100 km, 34 MPG highway.

Both offer a different exterior style, the CR-V is clean and simple, the Sportage futuristic. Interiors are also very unique, the Kia is modern with a dual panoramic curved display connecting two screens, the CR-V offers more of a minimalistic design.

Top trim to top trim, the Sportage has more features with a lower price point including, ventilated fronts seats, a 360-camera and a panoramic sunroof, all features the CR-V does not have available. The CR-V hybrid does have wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, the Sportage wired on the larger touchscreen, wireless for the smaller screen.

With only one trim available in Canada, the CR-V hybrid starts at $48,890 CAD. In the US, Sport FWD $32,450 USD, AWD $33,950 USD and Sport Touring $38,600 USD.

The Sportage hybrid starts at $36,995 CAD and the top trim $42,295 CAD. In the US, LX FWD $27,290 USD, AWD $29,090 USD, EX $30,990 USD and SX Prestige $36,190 USD.
