This is a very important thing to do for your chickens and something that is a must if you live in an area of the country that gets 'COLD'.
I don't mean that Fla. cold. I mean the wind is blowing, the snow is flying and that night's low temp is well below freezing.
Now please understand this; your chickens are just birds after all so they really DO NOT need a heated chicken coop for the winter even if you live in Minnesota. I have friend there that keeps chickens in a coop very much the same as I have here in TN. They do not heat their coop and have never lost a chicken to the Cold. They tell a story of someone they knew just down the road from them that had put a heat lamp in the coop and the coop caught fire. The local fire dept. said that they get a few call like this every year because new chicken owners try putting heat lamps in their coops only for the bedding dust to ignite and they end-up losing the coop and their flock.
So. . . NO Heat Lamps ! !
Just increase the amount of bedding and try to reduce drafts in the coop.
This will keep your birds comfy-cozy and it will possibly help with winter laying.
This is part one of what Mr. WHG and I do each year so that our birds over-winter with ease.
Hope you find this useful.
