Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced the Illuminati into the MCU, with a comic-accurate lineup. Reed Richards, Professor Xavier, Captain Carter, Black Bolt, and captain Marvel all faced off against Wanda--and all of them were easily beaten. But this does not mean that the Illuminati are gone forever form the MCU. In fact, we think this is just a peak of our favorite secret super team's future role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The MCU finally gave us the Illuminati….and then they killed them all.
Well, it was fun while it lasted.

If you are bummed out that Marvel killed off the Illuminati so quickly, don’t stress about it too much.
Because there’s a very good chance the Illuminati will be back, and this time it will be more than just a couple of fun cameos.

Doctor Strange 2 established the biggest threat to the multiverse, and that’s incursions. Which is exactly where the Illuminati could come in.
Stepehn is going to deal with the threats to the multiverse, and for that he’s going to need a team like the Illuminati.

So let’s map out how the illuminati can return, and what the MCU could do with them in the future.


Before we explain how the Illuminati will return, let’s explain the Illuminati we saw in the movie.

Stephen and America Chavez travel to Earth-838. Where they are captured and put on trial before the Illuminati.
The team consists of Professor X, Mister Fantastic, Captain Carter, Captain Marvel aka Maria Rambeau, Blackagar Boltagon aka Black Bolt, and finally Karl Mordo.

Earth-838’s Doctor Strange was part of the team, but he was executed after using the Daarkhold. He did that to stop Thanos, but that triggered an incursion, which is a universe ending event.
And that’s why the illuminati were so stressed about our Stephen arriving in their universe. Because they were afraid that Stepehn will trigger an incursion.

Which is exactly what happened, after Stephn used the Darkhold to dreamwalk.

Earth-838’s Illuminati were all slaughtered by Wanda. Which wasn’t such a big loss all considered, because they were a bunch of arrogant jerks.

Now while the Illuminati are all dead, this is not the last time we will see heroes from Earth-838 in the MCU. Because remember Mordo is still alive, and one of the other members of the group might have survived as well. But more on that later.

838 Strange formed the Illuminati to be a group who will make the difficult decisions that no one else could.

Which is how the team was created in the comics. The Illuminati originally came together as a team that takes preemptive actions against threats to Earth. Unlike the Avengers who are a reactive team.
They make the decisions that the Avengers won’t. Like when they threw Hulk into space so won’t put Earth in danger anymore.

While 838 Illuminati kidna sucked, there’s no denying that Earth needs a team like that.

I mean just look at what went down with Wanda, that pretty much proves that the world needs a team that is willing to take preemptive actions against threats. Before it’s too late, like when those threats go on a rampage and kill a bunch of people.

And that’s the stuff that keeps Stepehn awake at night. And it’s the very reason why he will form the Illuminati.

All of this being said, based on multiverse of madness, the MCU's Illuminati will be dealing mostly with the multiverse crisis.

The reason why 838 Illuminati put Stepehn on trial was because they were afraid he would trigger a multiversal incursion.

Incursions are the next big thing in the MCU. Once an incursion is triggered, the boundaries between realities shatter, causing two universes to collide with each other. Leading to the destruction of one of them or both.

In the credits scene, Clea shows up, telling Stepehn that he triggered an incursion and now they need to stop it. And this means that Stepehn will be dealing with incursions in the future.

The multiverse crisis is shaping up to be the MCU’s next major event, kinda like Thanos and the Infinity Stones were in the first 3 phases. The show Loki established the threats to the MCU [clip]. And now multiverse of madness confirmed just how high the stakes are.
