At the May 2021 virtual meeting of the BRAIN Multi-Council Working Group, BRAIN Initiative staff presented an overview of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts at the BRAIN initiative. Dr. Devon Crawford, Scientific Program Manager in the Office of Research Quality at National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, reviewed findings from a portfolio analysis of BRAIN Initiative investigator demographics between fiscal years 2014-2020. BRAIN Deputy Director, Dr. Beckel-Mitchener, highlighted current BRAIN DEI programs while Dr. Ryan Richardson, a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow at the BRAIN Initiative, introduced a new requirement for BRAIN grants, the Plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspectives (PEDP).
