While packing up for elk camp in early September, one of the local farmers stopped by and said he'd seen loads of deer coming out into a bean field the evening before. With archery season in full swing in the western states, Liz and I head out to see if we can get the drop on an early season buck. Since the deer are feeding in the fields at night, we find a likely spot in a timbered funnel to set up our tree stands. Not a half hour after getting settled in, a huge buck comes by at only 60 yards but well outside Liz's range. Next a big doe comes by but Liz can't get her bow drawn without spooking her. After sunset, we take the stands down and move them the next day over to where the big buck had crossed.
