Mortal Kombat is another new HBO Max blockbuster movie after Tom & Jerry and Godzilla vs Kong where cinematic titans fight, and it seems to fall somewhere between. It appears to be faithful to its video game origins -- bringing tons of characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Jax, Kano, Sonya Blade, Goro and so on -- but consequently it also seems to fall victim to the video game movie curse. In that, it might work as a video game movie for the fans of the source material, but it doesn't really have a universal appeal to viewers outside of that as effectively as certain other films like Sonic and Detective Pikachu.
