I have every faith that Indiana Jones 5 will be good. Director James Mangold wants to make a movie about “a hero at sunset”, a story about old age and reaching finality. He's the perfect person for the job, having cracked that story once already with Old Man Jackman in 2017’s stunning not-quite Swanson Logan. The day he was announced as the director my hype went up a notch and I became intrigued with every new detail and announcement. Phoebe Waller Bridge and Boyd Holbrook in key roles? Mads as the villain? Sign me up.

One of Mangold’s core principles with this movie is that the story must be about Indy’s age. He said that he had read scripts for the movie that alluded to it in jokes during the adventure, but he felt that none of the material explored it in a meaningful way. Just jokes and references....

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull did just that - opting to largely ignore Harrison Ford’s age in favour of trying to evoke the old Indy movies like we never left. But it also took some big swings, opting to explore secret aliens and the cold war as dictated by its 50s rather than 30s setting.

It was critically mauled by fans and critics alike. It still made 790 million at the box office and was the second highest grossing film of 2008 behind the dark knight though, so maybe general audiences liked it just fine. It’s hard to tell when the negativity was so overwhelming, particularly online - but we’ll get to that.

And as a kid I loved Crystal Skull - just as much as the other films - I think if anything - a lot of the criticisms and backlash were what dampened the fun - it was really all consuming in relation to the experience of the movie and it made it very hard to enjoy.

The way Crystal Skull was criticized marks the time it came out - and I wonder if it would be differently received today if it came out just the same, given that audiences love mixing magic with aliens and will accept poorly composited green screens.

I haven’t rewatched Crystal Skull in a long time, but I went in with an open mind - maybe it was one of those many films you watch as a kid that don’t hold up years later, or maybe it was truly better than everyone said…
