Is bread bad for you?

Bread isn't inherently "bad" for you, but its healthiness can depend on various factors such as the type of bread, your dietary needs, and how much you consume. Whole grain bread, for example, contains more fiber and nutrients compared to refined white bread, making it a healthier choice.

Is bread bad? Why You Should Mill Your Own Grains

Freshly milled grain can contribute to the healthiness of bread in several ways:

Preservation of Nutrients: Freshly milled grains retain more of their natural nutrients compared to processed flour. Whole grains are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. By milling the grains just before use, these nutrients are preserved, providing a more nutritious base for your bread.

Higher Fiber Content: Whole grains contain bran, germ, and endosperm, all of which contribute to the fiber content of the grain. Fiber is essential for digestive health, helps regulate blood sugar levels, and promotes a feeling of fullness, which can aid in weight management. Freshly milled grains retain more of their fiber content, resulting in bread with higher fiber content.

Reduced Oxidation: When grains are freshly milled, the oils present in the germ of the grain are less exposed to oxidation, which can lead to rancidity and a loss of flavor and nutritional value. By milling grains just before use, you can minimize the oxidation process, resulting in bread with fresher taste and higher nutritional value.

Control over Ingredients: When you mill your grains at home, you have control over the ingredients used in your bread. You can choose organic grains, avoid additives or preservatives, and ensure the quality and freshness of the final product.

Enhanced Flavor: Freshly milled grains have a richer, more intense flavor compared to processed flour, which can enhance the taste of your bread. The oils present in freshly milled grains contribute to a nuttier and more robust flavor profile, resulting in bread with superior taste and aroma.

Overall, using freshly milled grains in bread baking can result in a healthier and more flavorful product compared to bread made with processed flour.
