The Ballon d'Or is an award given to only a chosen few, but the name of the winner does not always make everyone happy. The 2001 vote was one of the most controversial in history and its winner earned the hatred of many. Today we remember the career of Michael Owen, the Golden boy who aimed to be the English Pelé and ended up suffering a curse due to his continuous injuries.

Although he was born in Chester, Owen was an Everton fan although he ended up playing for Liverpool. At the Reds he emerged as one of the most talented youngsters of the new century. In 1998 he played in his first World Cup scoring a great goal against England and after a great year in 2001 he won the Ballon d'Or ahead of Real Madrid player Raúl. From that moment the Best Player in the World began to suffer various injuries and his performance was never the same. In 2004 he ended up signing for Real Madrid de los Galacticos and went through Newcastle, Manchester United and Stoke City. With the English team he has played 3 World Cups, 2 European Championships and has scored 40 goals in 89 games. Owen is currently the sixth top scorer for the England team and, despite not winning anything with the Three Lions, he is one of the most important strikers for his team.
