I visited the city of Asahikawa in Hokkaido in the middle of winter. It's Japan's coldest city on average, and is the site of Japan's coldest-ever recorded temperature, –41ºC (–42ºF). I spent a couple hours (with several layers of clothes on!) wandering the streets of Asahikawa. In this video I investigate the Heiwa Shopping Street, Japan's first purpose-built pedestrian street; some side streets in a less-busy part of town; and a visit to a thing of real beauty, the Asahi Bridge, which takes road traffic (and pedestrians like me) across two rivers. Snowy, frigid, lively, and exciting – this is Asahikawa!
