I made it to an obscure hilltop Buddhist temple called Tsubosaka in central Nara, Japan. This temple is dedicated to bad eyesight – there's even a gigantic pair of eyeglasses at the base of one of the pagodas. Plus, there are endless unreal statues, some imported from (or influenced by) India. I was virtually the only visitor on a snowy day, and wandered the large complex for two hours, collecting stamps on a map that the friendly guy at the entrance said would earn me a free postcard. This was a remarkable day on a pleasantly snowy mountaintop in December!
