Phil Mickelson: The Most CRITICAL MOVEMENT to Become a GOOD Bunker player In this golf instructional video, Phil Mickelson explains and demonstrates how easy is to use the hinge and hold chipping method in a bunker. Phil Mickelson uses his hinge and hold chipping method in the bunker, with one additional CRITICAL MOVEMENT. That critical movement is ACCELERATING the hands through the sand INTO A HIGH FINISH (you must continue the motion through the shot to become a good bunker player). The hands don't finish with the arm and club in a straight line pointing low at the target (like in a basic hinge and hold 20 yard chip). The hands MUST accelerate and continue through to a high finish in the bunker. If done correctly the club will be pointing straight up into the sky at the finish. The hands and the club must accelerate equally together through the sand at impact (The hands lead the clubhead at all times), just like in the basic hinge and hold chip (Watch the "How to chip" links below). At no point does the clubhead pass the hands through impact (just like in the fundamentals of the basic hinge and hold chip). Phil Mickelson uses an open face chipping stance that is shoulder width apart (see the links below). Phil Mickelson opens the face of the club head, adjusts his body so that the club face is aimed at the target and then regrips the club. Phil Mickelson's weight is slightly forward and the golf ball is positioned just off the heel of the front foot. Phil Mickelson hinges the club immediately to start the back swing and then takes the club back so the shaft of the club is just past vertical. Phil Mickelson then accelerates his hands through impact and continues to a CRITICAL high finish. Practice exclusively at 10 yards to become extremely proficient at getting the golf ball out of any bunker or sand trap.
