When I built this dump car in 2021 it was designed with hand cranks to open the 2 dump doors on the bottom of the car. After a full year of use I realized that opening these doors after filling the car is just more work than what I want to be doing so I set out on finding some motors to do that work for me. Initially I had some right angle gearboxes sourced and was in the process of looking around for motors to apply to them when I stumbled upon a pair of 24 volt DC gear motors buried in some equipment in the back of the carbarn. These motors had some crude brackets attached to them and sprockets already on the shaft so I believe at one point they were used to power one of the trolley cars. I am assuming it was determined that they were geared too low to be used for that purpose and then removed, only for me to find them years later. It was pure luck that these motors were already here, and they fit absolutely perfectly in the space between the hopper body and the frame. I really could not have designed it more perfectly if I had the motors before building the car! They are Bendix Eclipse aircraft starter motors, I am really hoping that one of the viewers has seen these installed on an airplane and can tell me what they came from. What is really interesting about the motors is that they feature a knob on the back that you can move to lift all the brush springs simultaneously for quick changeout of the brushes, I have never seen that before on any motor and find it a really clever design. In this video you will see part of the process of removing the hand crank and putting a motor on, the details of the power supply and then see it in action. NOTE: Turn your sound down when I test the motor, they are a bit loud!
