After being out of service for a few years, the track to the Stansbury Lead Mine is being rebuilt. The original track was a siding, and was built with light rail and small ties. But this will track is now considered part of the mainline, and is being rebuilt with the heaviest aluminum rail and full 4x4 ties. The track is complete down to the mine and is currently being ballasted. 3/4" clean crushed limestone is used as ballast, and is hauled and spread using an ugly hopper car. The car is capable of carrying up to 700 lbs of ballast, but I like to do 3/4 loads of 525 lbs which is a bit less stressful on the newly laid track. The video shows how the hopper car is loaded and the ballast is dumped and spread. It does not show the leveling, tamping and manicuring process... but if you would like to see that, you are welcome to come out and help spread some ballast!
