This BMW ZF 8 speed transmission has no way to cool itself due to the tight enclosure that it is installed in. In combination with the plastic under car panels there is zero opportunity for airflow and natural cooling. The implemented solution is the installation of an aftermarket and upgraded trans pan with a filter and fluid. The design of the new pan changes the construction material from ABS plastic to a more durable and rigid aluminum. More importantly with the use of aluminum, large heat sinks can be incorporated into the pan design adding additional strength, but more importantly, adding surface area to provide cooling. With the installation of the upgraded aluminum oil pan, the transmission can expect to see lower operation cooling temperatures and longer transmission life. On a side note, I have found that ZF8 transmission has multiple different transmission fluid types and colors. There is a factory colored blue, green and some aftermarket fluids are red in color. Its should be noted that the part numbers for fluid should be referenced when choosing the correct fluid for the ZF8 in order to avoid installing the wrong oil.
