In 1906 the unthinkable happened in San Francisco, when a large earthquake and fire destroyed much of the city. But San Franciscans, with assistance from Sacramentans, New Yorkers and others, persevered in the face of enormous odds. They not only rebuilt the city; they documented their experiences. Join us as we showcase their story as captured in the images, papers, scrapbooks and memoirs preserved at the California State Library.

The California State Library's California History Section holds a premier collection of documents from and about California's rich history. Our vaults house thousands of rare books, maps, newspapers, and periodicals in addition to a huge collection of one-of-a-kind photographs, letters, and ephemeral items such as posters, pamphlets and sheet music. Regardless of whether you're a serious researcher, a fourth grader, or an average person visiting Sacramento, we'll have a resource for you! Visit us at library.ca.gov/california-history.
