On October 6, 2022, for opening night of the film series Mexico Maleficarum: Resurrecting 20th Century Mexican Horror Cinema, the Academy Museum hosted a screening of El Vampiro (1957) and Cronos (1993) in the Ted Mann Theater.

Prior to the screening, Mexico Maleficarum was introduced by Abraham Castillo Flores, series guest programmer; Mariana Da Silva, founder of El Cine; and Cynthia Prida Bravo, consul of cultural affairs at the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles.

Castillo Flores went on to introduce El Vampiro and Cronos_, discussing how the films bookended the vampire experience in Mexican cinema in the 20th century; how _El Vampiro was only the third time that fangs appeared in a vampire movie; and how a young Guillermo del Toro mortgaged his house and sold his car in order to finish making _Cronos_.

Generously supported by Televisa Foundation–Univision Foundation in celebration of Mexican Cinema. Academy Museum film programming supported by the Richard Roth Foundation. Mexico Maleficarum has the community partnership and support provided by El Cine, the Tomorrow’s Filmmakers Today program of Hola Mexico, and the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles.
