In this episode I provide the history of the Pontiac Fiero, which was GM's first mid-engined two-seater, and its first car to have a steel space frame with composite plastic body panels. Despite its very un-sporty 92 horsepower Iron Duke four-cylinder engine, it was a huge sales hit when it launched for the 1984 model year. But was soon plagued with reports of engine fires, which led to multiple recalls. A V6 was offered for 1985, and the source of the fire problem was resolved, but sales were down by nearly 50% that year. Despite a new fastback GT model in 1986, and a much improved suspension and steering design for 1988, sales had dropped so much that GM pulled the plug that year.
