I first became aware of this topic during my pharmacy residency when I did a case report on a patient using lithium to manage bipolar disorder. During a deep literature dive I found a study conducted in 1990 on Texas groundwater using demographic data and geographic surveys. Trace amounts of lithium are found in groundwater as well as incorporation into the food chain. This study found a significant correlation of a reduction of suicides and homicides in counties with higher levels of lithium exposure
compared to areas with low lithium exposure after controlling for population density as a confounding factor. The study also found a statistically significant inverse relationship in arrest rates for possession
of cocaine, opium, and morphine derivatives. From a demographic perspective this provides compelling evidence that minute doses of lithium can help reduce depressive symptoms, aggression, and addictive
behavior.

This study in Texas was followed up by additional research in other countries. Japan replicated thestudy looking specifically at suicide mortality in the 18 municipalities in the Oita prefecture between
2002 and 2006. Another study published out of Austria in 2011 was particularly compelling. They took 6,460 measurements of lithium in drinking water across 99 different districts in Austria. This study
accounts for even more potential confounding factors including: population density, per capita income, proportion of Roman Catholics, and availability of mental health services. With these factors considered
the effect of lithium had a higher correlation than the previously mentioned studies.
