Hi guys!

This is the 3rd year I’m competing in the horsemanship challenge, and I’m attempting it with 4 horses. For day 21 I only videoed Lady as I am backed up on footage needing to be edited and posted. It takes me about 3 minutes to edit each minute of footage (which is always more than the posted video) so obviously it takes a lot of time that I don’t have a lot of. Right now, Lady has the most exciting things going on therefore is currently making the best videos.

The barrel jump obstacle as seen in this video is helpful for the versatility of the horse; learning new skills and finding talents, but it also gives them something tangible to do during lunging work. Its larger than ground poles, cavelettis, or pipe, so it makes them think more and work their muscles more. It is also important for them to know because I know I have had to take horses over downed trees about the same size, and the horse being able to jump over it rather easily saved time and stamina, while also keeping us on the trail.

The ground poles give us targets for odd-shape lunging but also reminds her pick up her feet as she travels, which helps build proper movement and muscle.

The plastic culvert pipe is something she has to think more about crossing but she doesn’t necessarily need to jump. Helps her learn to be confident in her foot placement.

The side over trick, aka Taxi, is to build her confidence in picking up a rider which will help her in her future as a show and trail horse.

The last bit was to simulate the motion of getting on. Due to feeling light headed and the potential for me to have another nosebleed, I opted to not ride like i was planning to. Nose bleeds like I get are terrifying for all parties, so its completely off the table for me to get on a green horse if I think the veins will pop again. Yes I’m fine… maybe 😅 We’ll blame it on the dry Colorado air. Anyway, she still needed to be “rode” so I took a minute to get as close to getting on as comfortable.

In this challenge, I get 120 days to complete 100 sessions with each horse, in hopes of winning a buckle or other various prizes. This is my last year as a youth, in fact I turn 18 in the middle of the challenge, so I’m trying to go out with a second buckle from the challenge. I received a buckle in 2022 for a 60 day division. I have a chance of getting the youth 100 buckle per horse I complete the challenge with. I don’t think they’ll have a 60 day buckle this year.
