The 2023 Toyota Kluger has arrived with a turbo twist! That's right; the large SUV has changed its petrol engine option as part of a model-year update, with the tried-and-true 3.5-litre naturally aspirated V6 replaced by a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit.
To put the Kia Sorento rival's engine transplant into perspective, power is down 20kW, to 198kW, but torque is up 70Nm, to 420Nm, so it's all not all bad news on paper. Plus, fuel consumption should be markedly better, right? Not quite.
So, was downsizing a mistake for the updated Kluger? Well, in this expert review, CarsGuide News Editor Tung Nguyen and his family of four spend a week with its mid-spec GXL petrol variant to find out if your money is now definitely better spent on the Hybrid version.
