How much Kluger do you get for under $50,000? To find out, we borrowed an absolute base model 2021 Toyota Kluger (also known as the Toyota Highlander in most other markets). The cheapest new Kluger is front wheel drive and powered by the same 3.5-litre naturally aspirated V6 petrol making 218kW (292 hp) as the previous generation.

However, as we found out in our recent Kluger Hybrid AWD review, the new Kluger has substantially better ride and handling characteristics than the old car. Does that also translate to the chubby-tyred base model? You bet!

Rivals to the Toyota Kluger include the Mazda CX-9, Kia Sorento, and the Hyundai Palisade.
