Nathan Bieber M.M. ’23, a graduate student in Berklee Valencia’s scoring for film, television, and video games program, composed and recorded music for this piece, “The Silver Streaks,” at AIR Lyndhurst Studios in London as part of his culminating experience project.

The Silver Streaks tells the story of Bieber’s grandfather, John, who served aboard a B-26 bomber as a gunner and radio operator during WWII. It captures a dramatic day-in-the-life of what his time may have been like. The piece begins mournfully and still,and suddenly there is a call to action; John and his crew must leap into action. They off and, after another moment of stillness, are confronted by a squadron of Luftwaffe fighter planes. A dramatic dogfight ensues: both sides are unleashing heavy fire while planes are crashing and burning. In this part of the piece I tried to capture the tension one might feel if they were in that situation, but also to create the musical energy necessary to reflect the high-stakes aerial acrobatics. Somehow, John and his crew survive the dogfight with only some cuts and bruises. And with a triumphant setting of the main theme, they return to their base to fight another day.

Every year, students in the scoring for film, television, and video games graduate program travel to a major, industry-leading, recording studio in the beginning of the summer semester to record a piece of original music performed by a 50-plus piece orchestra. After that, they receive a recording of the session, which students will mix and master to present as part of their CEs. Past trips have included sessions at the famed London studios, AIR Lyndhurst, and Abbey Road.
