Greg discusses things to consider before selecting and installing a whole-house water treatment system.
Consider your needs and desired outcomes when selecting a softening system or a filtration (purification system).
Do you want to reduce scaling for showers, coffee makers, steam machines, etc or do you want to remove certain chemicals.
Other considerations include if you are willing to "spend water" to treat water, for which you will need a drain avaiable in the treatment system area. Some systems also require power, so the availability of power (or the willingness to install it) may be an installation consideration.
A bypass valve will allow servicing the system without interupting water supply to the entire building.
If you are considering a reverse osmosis (RO) system, considerations include the purpose and type of plumbing and the option of post-RO treatment to re-introduce some minerals both for taste and protection for any copper piping downstream of the RO unit.
