If you know Honda, you know the HR-V is the brand's small SUV. You also know the existing one was a legend in the segment for its supreme practicality, but never really offered too much in the way of driving delight. It was hamstrung by a 1.8-litre engine and lazy CVT automatic, and the interior really started to show its age compared to newer competitors in the early 2020s.

But now there's an all-new HR-V, one that takes a very different design-led approach to the compact crossover segment. It is playing a space dominated by Toyota, Mazda and Kia, and like all of those brands, the Honda HR-V 2022 finally adds a hybrid powertrain for the first time in Australia.

With prices higher than ever before, but more equipment and tech inside, does the new HR-V make for a decent small SUV option? And is the choice to offer it only with four seats going to be a deal breaker for buyers?
