The family of boat howitzers designed by John A. Dahlgren dates from the 1850’s and was the Navy’s primary man-portable amphibious support gun through the late1800’s. The howitzer in the video is a replica built by Steen Cannons and is owned by a member of the Tidewater Maritime Living History Association. Local Coast Guard commands provided the active-duty volunteers who received training on working the replica howitzer in order to then safely operate an original 12 lbs medium howitzer held by US Coast Guard Base Portsmouth.
