Mudroom & Bathroom Episode 2: DIY Waterproofing Tub Shower Walls – Today I am waterproofing the bathtub shower in the mudroom bathroom. I am using Mapei Aquadefense and XFasten Fiberglass Membrane Fabric Tape. Before waterproofing, I taped and mudded (with modified thin-set) the joints of the cement board. All the studs around the shower were furred out with ¼” strips to allow me to install the cement board over (in front of) the bathtub flange. Then I caulked where the bathtub meets the cement board and where the bathtub meets the Ditra floor underlayment. I then applied the fabric tape embedded in Aquadefense on all the cement board joints and corners. After all the joints were done, I rolled two coats of the Aquadefense on the cement board.
