The newer technology of surface applied waterproofing membrane for tiled showers allows the installer to waterproof over the dry pack mortar bed as opposed to under it. This alleviates the possibility of a saturated mortar bed and the mold issues that can arise from clogged weep holes or bad pre-slope. When using a surface applied membrane, no pre-slope is needed, saving time and money. Laticrete Hydro Ban is the best liquid applied waterproofing membrane on the market today. Redgard may be cheaper, but it lacks the solids that provide an even thick coat and flexibility.
Liquid membrane waterproofing is easier to install than sheet membranes like Schluter Kerdi.
