The 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (Focac) opens on September 4, 2024, in Beijing. Held every three years, Focac is China and Africa’s most important engagement mechanism. Beijing has traditionally used the event to pledge investments in major infrastructure projects such as ports, railways, power dams and highways. While China’s investments might be smaller this year, they are expected to focus on agriculture, industrialisation and increasing the processing capacity of the continent’s vast minerals extraction sector.
