In the middle of the 20th century, the Three Tribes of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara had lived on the lands of North Dakota for a millennium, following their way of life by the banks of the Missouri River. The town of Elbowoods was the cultural heart of their affiliation, but in 1954, with the construction of the Garrison Dam, the entire town was washed away and became only a ghostly memory.
