Adding integers vertically requires two parts, the first one is to set up the integers and the second part is actually adding the integers together. To set up the integers we need to line up the integer’s columns according to the ones’ digits (1s) and tens’ digit (10s) places. So ones’ digit integers are aligned with the other ones’ digit integer, and tens’ digit integers are aligned with the other tens’ digit integer
Once we have set up the integers in their right order we can move on to add them up. Keep in mind 2 important key aspects:
- We are always going to add the integers that fall in the same column, and
- We are always going to start from right to left, that is, from the 1's column to the 10’s column.
But wait! What happens if there isn’t a number in a column? In that case we take the blank or nothing space as zero and proceed with solving.
