Darryl Mitteldorf, LCSW, is a social worker who began focusing on prostate cancer shortly after founding and leading a prostate cancer support group. Initially, he was motivated by providing a space for his father, who had been recently diagnosed, to receive and provide emotional support; however, by listening to the experiences of men in this support group, Mr. Mitteldorf noticed that prostate cancer patients had a set of needs and experiences that often times went unnoticed by the medical community and society at large, and therefore went largely unaddressed. To help remedy these "blind spots," Mr. Mitteldorf founded "Malecare" in 1998 -- initially to provide resources to men afflicted by breast cancer and to the LGBT population afflicted by prostate cancer. Since 1998, the organization has gradually expanded its scope and now provides a number of valuable resources that are relevant for all types of cancer patients and their loved ones.

In this video, PCRI's Alex asks Mr. Mitteldorf why he chose to focus his professional efforts on prostate cancer, how patients can use and benefit from the various resources offered by his non-profit organization, "Malecare," and other questions to tease out what else patients can learn and gain by looking at prostate cancer "through the lens" of a social worker.
