In this interview, Arshan speaks with 19-year-old rapper, Iayze, during a recent trip to Houston, Texas. Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, Iayze has released 13 full length projects in just two years – I.D.L.Y.A., Forever, Final Fantasy Deluxe, Starlight, The Leak!, Juh-Ay-Es, Final Fantasy Two, The Leek Two!, Venture, The Leek 3!, Monarch, Demons, and Curation. This impressive work ethic has solidified Iayze’s spot as a major figure in the underground. His song “556 (Green Tip)” has amassed over 18 million plays on Spotify alone, and his DotComNirvan-directed music video for “C’mere” has over 1.1 million views.
During their conversation, Iayze reveals that he watches KTO, talks about his Instagram getting deleted, gaining 100,000 followers in less than a year, and says that the downside to blowing up is getting more trolls. He explains why he spells Jace as “Iayze”, listening to rock music and Kanye growing up, and overcoming his dysfunctional family. Iayze then talks about his parents’ different reactions to him rapping, dealing with anxiety and trauma, his daughter giving him motivation, and how Summrs helped him more than people realize. He says that his only other job was McDonalds and describes his worst experience with customer, before talking about “C’mere”, his unintentional voice cracks, and describing his sound as “alternative plug”.
Iayze admits that he didn’t realize “556 (Green Tip)” was blowing up on TikTok, before describing how he linked up with Slayworld, Summrs, KanKan, and Yeat. He lists his favorite producers, talks about his relationship with Duwap Kaine, and says “556” would be perfect for the GTA 6 soundtrack. Iayze says he eventually wants to do a Kanye-style documentary, before naming COD: Ghosts as his favorite Call of Duty.
