Canned sardines are a cultural icon in Portugal. The fish has such a long history that it even has its own festival. Family-owned Ramirez & Sons has kept the canning tradition alive for nearly 200 years. But it hasn’t been easy. The company has faced dropping fish stocks and a revolution.
