The Pace Report: "Hip Hop at 50- the 30th Anniversary of Juice" The Ernest Dickerson Interview
Welcome to this special edition of @ThePaceReport celebrating the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop.

On January 17, 1992 Director Ernest Dickerson's debut film Juice was released to critical acclaim and rave reviews. This coming of age film centered around four Black teenage males growing up in Harlem, New York has become a classic crime story that starred Omar Epps, Khalil Kain, Jermaine Hopkins, and the debut of rapper and actor Tupac Shakur,,,,,,.

Juice was shot on a $5 million dollar budget and grossed over $30 million at the box office. The music score was composed by Hank Shocklee and the Bomb Squad and produced a series of hip hop classics by Eric B. and Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Naughty By Nature, and Heavy D.

At this year's 49th Newark Black Film Festival, held at The Newark Museum Of Art, they honored Ernest with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work as director and cinematographer. Mr. Dickerson was Spike Lee's cinematographer for "School Daze," "Do The Right Thing," "Mo Better Blues," "Jungle Fever," and "Malcolm X." Over the last 40 years he's directed some iconic television including "Law and Order," "The Wire," "Godfather of Harlem," "Dexter," and "The Walking Dead."

On this very special edition of The Pace Report, I sat down with Ernest to discuss the legacy of Juice, the impact it still has on viewers, actor Tupac Shakur's role and impact, and the music and how hip-hop played in the score.
