The Pace Report: "Celebrating Coltrane" The Norman Connors Interview
Welcome to this special edition of The Pace Report.

Recently in Harlem at the famed Paris Blues Jazz Club, the New York City jazz community came out in full to celebrate the birthday of NEA Jazz Master and saxophonist, John William Coltrane. Jazzmobile in conjunction with the Office of State Senator Cordell Cleare, Harlem Late Night Jazz, The New York Jazz Society, and the Jazz Foundation of America held a special concert that Marcus Garvey Park that was rained out. Many of the musicians that were slated to play the concert played to a intimate set at Paris Blues.

Drummer, composer, producer, and record executive Norman Connors was one of the headlining musicians that was slated to play the John Coltrane Birthday Celebration. In career spanning seven decades, Mr. Connor's connection to Coltrane began in his hometown of Philadelphia at the age of 15. He sat in for the legendary Elvin Jones while Coltrane played at Pep's. Throughout Norman's career he's been blessed to be mentored, record, write, and tour with two of Coltrane's students and mentees, Archie Shepp and Pharaoh Sanders. It was while working with Pharaoh that Norman started his solo career in the early 1970's and had a deep relationship with him until his death last year.

Norman not only was a prolific drummer and composer, his first four solo albums were critically acclaimed and featured some very iconic musicians including Herbie Hancock, Onaje Allen Gumbs, Cecil McBee, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gary Bartz, Eddie Henderson, Billy Hart, Stanley Clarke, and Airto.

During the mid-1970s Norman became a producer of many R&B hits introducing the talents of Jean Carn, Michael Henderson, and Phyllis Hyman.

In this special edition of The Pace Report, Mr. Connors and I sat down to discuss the legacy of John Coltrane and what he means to him, the role of a record producer, and reflect on his mentor Pharaoh Sanders.
