Outside of maybe one or two, Disney live action remakes or reimaginings have largely been disappointing and that's mostly because they wind up being a safe, uninspired, shot for shot remake of the superior original. Even the one's that try to "do something different," manage to wind up being a disappointment due to it's fundamental betrayal of the character (Maleficent). With Cruella 2021, Disney enlisted the help of I, Tonya director, Craig Gillespie, and the talents of Emma Stone, Emma Thompson, and Paul Walter Hauser, to tell a villain origin story prior to 101 Dalmations of the iconic Cruella de Vil. Estella is a young and clever grifter who's determined to make a name for herself in the fashion world. She soon meets a pair of thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they build a life for themselves on the streets of London. However, when Estella befriends fashion legend Baroness von Hellman, she embraces her wicked side to become the raucous and revenge-bent Cruella. While a Cruella origin story may sound lame on paper, in execution, it's Disney's most inventive, stylish, original, and enjoyable live action remake yet! The Cruella movie is good because it dares to explore one of Disney's greatest villains while still maintaining everything we love about the character.
