Is the country of the future a place where children become pregnant? Is the largest Catholic country in the world also where over thirty thousand women die as a consequence of abortion? Is the 10th largest economy on the planet the one where 27% of women are sterilized? These questions were the starting points for Ventre Livre (Free Womb, or Liberation), a groundbreaking documentary from 1994 about reproductive rights in Brazil.

It tells the stories of Vera, Ivonete, Carmen, Denise, Maria do Carmo, and Marlove - individuals born in the country with the most unequal income distribution on the planet. Three decades have passed, and the nation still awaits the future.
