The Pace Report: "Imani Calling" The Orrin Evans Interview with Lisa Fischer
Welcome to this special edition of The Pace Report live from the 2023 Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival.

Pianist and composer Orrin Evans over the last decade has taken on the business not only developing and mentoring musicians, he's given them a platform to release and own their own masters and music. Imani Records has been on the frontlines in promoting and releasing musicians that most major record labels overlooked or have no means of funding. With the old model of the record industry losing due to the digital platform of how music is being distributed and bought, Orrin has adapted and improved the means of how new artists's music can be exposed and what music listeners demand. With well over 50 titles on Imani Records, Orrin not only performed with this quintet at this year's PIJF, he introduced musicians throughout the the festival, he also hosted the Imani Records All-Stars for the official after-hours set.

In August, Orrin and his Captain Black Big Band was the headliner of the opening night of the 2023 Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in Harlem. Vocalist Dianne Reeves was slated to perform was special guest, but due to illness Grammy-Award vocalist Lisa Fischer and Bilal filled-in.

This special edition of The Pace Report includes my interview with Orrin, special performances of his quintet, the Imani Records All-Stars, and his Captain Black Big Band performance from the 2023 Charlie Parker Jazz Festival.
