Latissimus Dorsi Muscle Length Test (Tight Lats?)

When evaluating the latissimus dorsi muscle it is important to test it both passively and actively to see if you truly have tight lats or have a capsular restriction. Lat tightness is very common among overhead athletes as well as people with shoulder pain. The latissimus dorsi muscle length can only be tested accurately by controlling other aspects and the muscle must be isolated. Latissimus dorsi pain may not be a result of purely inflexibility and this test only tells whether the lat is restricting rom or altering movement. We will be posting future videos on lat stretches and activation exercises to elongate the lat and truly change its usable range of motion.
