Transmission Cooler Design
Curt has some transmission coolers and a white board to show how the fluid flows through the stock cooler compared to an after market cooler.
Stock Ford transmission cooler design had extra ports in the tube to help cool the fluid more, but instead gathered debris in the coolant and eventually blocked the flow.
A standard cooler has a smoother flow for the fluid.

Curt also addresses the question about running the cooler separate from the radiator. In northern states with freezing temperatures, it is recommended to run the coolant lines through the radiator then to the transmission cooler and back to the transmission. This will help warm the transmission up in cold weather.
