In this video, Curt goes through how to tear down a 4L80E. Then he talks about the common problems found in this transmission and the solutions to those problems. Most issues are seen when the transmission is overheating or is starved for oil. This can happen in early models because of the positioning of the coolant lines. Some drums can develop ring grooves from Teflon rings which would lose lubrication and cause the planetary to burn up. Finally, sometimes the clutches on the drum will slip and cause grooves in the drum which can cause the clutches to only apply partially or not apply at all.
