Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a game all about great expectations.

When Spider-Man PS4 dropped in 2018 it was met with well-deserved praise for how it interpreted the characters, constructed its city, and developed a kinetic tie between the player and the webhead through its combat and its accessible web-swinging. But that game wasn’t without its own flaws. The combat left some room for improvement. The traversal system deserved some further complexity. The active crimes were uninspired, and most of all… the stealth system needed to be completely reconfigured for future titles.

So it’s inevitable that people like me, who think about this rendition of Spidey far too often, will have… great expectations for Spider-Man: Miles Morales. This is pretty apt seeing as this idea of “Great Expectations,” is at the core of Miles as a character, be it in the comics, his own movie, or… yes… this game.

First a quick disclaimer:
Whilst I will be assessing S-triple-M on its own merits, this game is a continuation of the gameplay and story Insomniac crafted in Spider-Man PS4. Systems and mechanics are… kindof… built from and developed on so I’m also treating this critique as a… Part 2 to my analysis of the original game, so if you haven’t watched it – link’s on screen below, and while you’re foolishly clicking around, why not subscribe? I won’t be discussing the core of the traversal or the combat in this video so I avoid returning to material I’ve already critiqued.
