Dr. Gideon Yaffe presents Criminal Responsibility and the Neuroscience of Addiction at the Colloquium on Law, Neuroscience, and Criminal Justice on March 14 -- 15, 2013 in Palo Alto, California. Dr. Yaffe is a Professor of Law and Professor of Philosophy at Yale Law School. The colloquium was sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Law and Neuroscience and co-sponsored by the Federal Judicial Center, Vanderbilt Law School, Stanford Center for Law and the Biosciences, and the Gruter Institute for Law and Behavioral Research.

Description and Learning Objectives: This session provides an introduction to the neuroscience of addiction and current knowledge on treatment efficacy. It will also introduce the work of the Research Network on decision making in addicts, and critically assess the implications of addiction science for criminal responsibility. Specific learning objectives include:

• Introduction to the work of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Law and Neuroscience on information processing and criminal mental states in the addicted brain.

• Discussion and debate about what research on the neuroscience of addiction may add to existing behavioral models for purposes of improving doctrine and/or practice in the criminal justice system.
