The 2024 Toyota Century SUV has just been unveiled, making this the first time that the Century nameplate has been offered in an SUV body style. The Century is Toyota’s answer to established European ultra-luxury cars like the Rolls-Royce Phantom, and as the world continues to show its love for SUVs, the creation of this ultra-luxury SUV was pretty much inevitable.

Built on the TNGA-K platform shared with several Toyota and Lexus models, the Century SUV measures 5,205 mm long. 1,990 mm wide and 1,805 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,950 mm. It is a bit shorter than the Century sedan in terms of length, but still a humongous vehicle. But the so-called "Dynamic Rear Steering" should make things a bit easier for the driver.

At the front, the four LED lamps inside each headlamp were clearly separated. The massive grille at the front was filled with a hexagonal-shaped pattern, and, surprisingly, there was no Toyota badge on it. Instead, the automaker used the Phoenix bird badge that took center stage and reminded customers about the older Century models. Underneath it, on the lower side of the bumper, Toyota installed the rear grille flanked by two side scoops. From its profile, the shaved corners resembled those from the 1967 Toyota Century executive car, while the D-pillars had a similar look to those from the 2018 Century. But one of the most interesting features of the Century was on its rear doors. These were front-hinged but could also slide rearward so passengers could easily ingress and egress from the rear seats.

The interior has been designed around the two second-row passengers. There’s an electrically retracting aluminium side step, a rear door that opens to 75 degrees, and a large grab handle to make it easier for passengers to get in and out.

The rear seats are electrically adjustable and fold fully flat, which Toyota claims is a world first. In order to make this happen the front passenger seat moves all the way forward to meet the dashboard.

Other second-row amenities include rotating retractable tables, two 11.6-inch headrest-mounted displays, two removable 5.5-inch touchscreen control panels, analogue clock, LED reading lighting, a shoehorn holder, as well as a refrigerator.

Up front there’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

There’s also an 18-speaker sound system, wireless phone charger, digital rear-view mirror, heated steering wheel, as well as a module of buttons to adjust the car’s features from the driver’s seat.

the new Toyota Century comes with a 3.5-litre V6 plug-in hybrid engine, paired to a CVT transmission and mounted on an eFour all-wheel drive system. A similar setup can be found on the TX550h SUV that was recently introduced by Toyota’s sister brand, Lexus.

The 2024 Toyota Century SUV will be produced at the Tahara plant in Japan. With a monthly production limit of 30 vehicles for the Japanese market, it seems unlikely that this vehicle will be exported outside Japan.
