In this video, Philippa Perry explores some of the keys to developing mental well-being in children. “Our children need a lot of attention because they’ve only got you,” says Perry, who goes on to highlight the importance of a secure bond between parent and child. The British psychotherapist uses her metaphor of an orchid and a dandelion; two very different flowers that show us how different children and their ways of adapting to the world can be. “With a dandelion, you might be able to say ‘Goodnight,’ and they go to sleep by themselves. A supersensitive child might want you to lie down with them until they’re asleep,” explains the author.

British author and psychotherapist Philippa Perry is known for her sharp, accessible approach to mental health. She has achieved worldwide recognition for ‘The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read’, a bestselling essential guide for parents that has been translated into over 40 languages. She is also the author of ‘Couch Fiction’, ‘How to Stay Sane’ and most recently ‘The Book You Want Everyone You Love* To Read *(and maybe a few you don’t)’. Through 20 years of private practice, she has found a place to help others through self-awareness in her writing. Currently, she can often be found on TV and radio shows and in her columns for ‘The Observer’ and ‘The Guardian’, which themselves are a benchmark for relationship advice.
